out and about around kyoto and nara

between sarah and matts and the train station is this place, comic cafe! what a wicked idea, a 24hr comic station where for 1300 yen you can sit around for 6 hours and read all the latest comics. if only i could read more japanese :(

to the north of kyoto on the base of the mountains are heaps of old temples.

outside this one were these huge iron weapons that the monks used to "carry around". man they were heavy

on the way from and to temples are lots of stores selling knick knacks and souvenirs and stuff. also delicious japanesey donuts. yummo!

and guess who's home is kyoto! none other then our favorite cartoon star astro boy or, by his real janeanese name, mighty atom! in the show he was invented in the 2003, 89 days in fact from when we were there. would have been cool to be around the day he was brought to life. you could hit the yellow buttons and the lights would flash. cool.

from the makers of mighty atom also comes kimba the white lion or again, by his japanese name little emperor leo (?!)

to the south of kyoto is the equally ancient town of nara. nara was the capital of japan around the year 780. it is home to many a deer who are free to wander around everywhere. they are prettttty dangerous (according to this sign)

they also love to eat stuff and there are many stalls about to buy special food for them. and they know when you've got something to eat

lots more old beautiful temples

and todai-ji temple, the largest free standing wooden building in the world. those dots in the doorways are people! inside is a massive 15m high buddha.

down south
